What does Eliezer mean when he writes that he feels free after his father's death? Is he free of responsibility? Or is he free to go under to drift into death?

  1. What Eliezer means when he writes that he feels free is that now that his father isn’t with him he doesn’t have the emotional stress of always worrying about his dad. It was also a huge physical relief because he was now done with picking up his dads slack and defending his dad whenever the guards threatened him. I think this gave him more of a reason to get out and survive for his dad.

  2. After Elie’s dad dies and he says he gains freedom I think it’s because he no longer is forced to stay alive even if he doesn’t want to. Previously he thought that he had to stay alive because he couldn’t leave his dad to live by himself. There were times when death seemed like the better option but the thought of his dad being alone forced him to stay alive. After his dad died he now has the choice to drift into death. Even though Elie does make it out alive he never made the final decision that death is the better choice and he kept fighting until he finally was released. The death of his dad gained him freedom, but at the same time lost the only thing he had to live for.

  3. I think Eliezer is free in the sense that he doesn't have to worry about his father. His father is gone, this may be relieving for him because he knows his father isn't in this horrible place anymore. He now has the choice to die, he doesn't have to worry about any emotions. His father is the only thing he had left to live for, giving him freedom with the choice of death.

  4. I think Elie feels free from his father's expectations, worries and pressure to keep going. Even though he wouldn't want to die in the first place, Elie has a relieving sense that gave him more freedom from his father's concerns. By having his father always there next to him, he always had someone to lean on, but after his father's death, he was on his own. He had to fight for himself now, and I believe he wanted to make each family member's death mean something through his fight in perseverance.

  5. He is free of the responsibility of taking care of his father and having someone leaning on his shoulder for death. Now he was there for himself and that was it. If Elie were to die now he knows he is not leaving someone behind.

  6. i feel that when his father died he felt free for both of thise reasons. he was free to take care of himself and be able to eat his portion of food without giving it to his father. and he would be able to focus on himself and his well being. but he also felt free to drift into death because he wouldnt have to worry about his father being in the concentration camp alone. that h could die without feeling guilty of abandoning his own father.

  7. After the death of his father he felt free from all the responsobilities. He doesnt need to save more bread for him, he can just eat alot himself and survive. And if he dies his father wont be sad for the rest of the life because he wont see how he is gonna die. And Elie can start taking care of himself now and try to work hard and survive.

  8. I feel like Elie is more free of the guilt he always felt anytime the Kapo's would put his father in pain. I also eel like now that Elie doesn't have to worry about his father he can lead his life the way he wants to without so much emotional stress.

  9. what i think Elie meant by he was free after his dads death is that he didn't have to look after anyone now. he felt relieved and at peace that he didn't have to worry about anyone else

  10. I feel like he meant that he has no worries of his father worrying about elie if something bad happened to him. As a teenager, I don’t want to put pressure on my parents ever about my safety

  11. 85-115 In Auschwitz I think Elie felt free mentally and physically when his father died. Elie must have felt some sort of relief that he didn't have to be dragged with having to take care and worry for his father. But Elie was a little happy that his father was not suffering in the concentration camp. Elie would not have to keep stressing on the thought that his father was dying.

  12. 13. Free of the stress the burden of worrying about his poor sick father, he was free and so was his father. Elie says that he's free but free as in being able to only worry about himself and not feel emotionally drained.

  13. When Elie writes that he feels free after his father's death, I think he meant he is free of worry and concern about the lives of both his and his fathers life. Survival is hard when you are not your own main focus and i think thats what Elie felt. Additionally, Elie probably felt relief- his father was free from a place where freedom was questioned and gone.

  14. He feels free because he doesn’t have to take care of an old man anymore and he doesn’t have to waste any efforts to share his food carry him around and encouraging him to survive. Even though his loneliness increased, so did his chance of survival, and that’s why I think Elie was kind of happy, relieved, and free.

  15. He feels free because he doesnt need to keep taking car of him and do his work and his dads work. Also he doesnt have to take him to the bathroom and get him water. I dont think Elie wanted his dad to die but he probably felt alittle releaf because his dad is now in a better place. StewardS5

  16. I think what he means by being free is that he doesn't have to worry about trying to protecting him or standing up for him. He doesn't have to watch his dad go through hell and he knows his dad is no longer suffering.

  17. I think this is because when his father alive, he need support his father so he workinghard even he is very weak, but after his father died, he don't need show his father he never give up. He can give up now, or whenever he want.

  18. Ellie thinks he's free because he doesnt have to help his father anymore. He is feeling now that he doesnt have to take care of anyone other then himself. Eliie probably thought of his dad as an anchor keeping him down. now Eliie can maintain himself now and not have the feeling of babysitting someone else

  19. When Elie writes that he feels free after his father death, i think he meant he's free of worrying about his dad and making sure he kept both of them safe no matter what. he gets him food, water and soup but when his dad past away(RIP) he did not cry because he cried all his life their was no more tears he couldn't cry. But now he could eat more and rest more

  20. I think he wanted to be alone from the starting of the story because as far as he remember, he had always thought about his father and had trouble going through things like the selection. he was worried that he might not be able to see his father so every time he had the feeling of losing so as long as he is alive he always thought about him but when he is dead than there is nothing to worry about.

  21. elie wrote that he feels free after his father died because he was able to do everything that he couldnt because his father held him back.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i think Elie thought both because Elie felt that he was the reason his father fought to live and if he died his father would die but since his father died i think he didnt really care if he died or not.

  23. 12. When his father died Elie felt free. However I think he did not mean free from responsibility from his father, in my opinion he felt free to die. No one from his family was alive, he lost all his hope into the God ‘s helping and also he was very tired. I believe that inside of his soul he was ready to do everything to his father if that will stop him from dyeing. Like every child he needed father, and he loved him very much (when he thought that he is angry on his father he was not really angry on him, he was angry on the God that did not protected them from concentration camp.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think he meant it both ways. Elie loved his father, so As the days went on he probably began to feel lonely, and very guilty like he should have done more. Taking care of his father was a very big responsibility, but deep down he probably knew that no matter what he did, his father would have died anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think he maens that he feels free to try and rebel/ fight back and not have to worry about them hurtng his father instead of him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He does not have to look out for him any longer to see if he is okay or alive. So he is free of that responsibility to look out for him ant longer. Also not worrying about how his actions would affect his father and he does not have a reason to live.

    ReplyDelete
  27. He is free to die because he loved his father alot so i dont think he would be free of responsibility also because he didnt want his dad to suffer the loss of another family member and he didnt want him to feel alone. But he might mean free from responsibility also because taking care of another person in Auschwitz was really hard and a lot of work.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He is free in the means of that there is nothing/no one holding him back now.Now he can start doing better with everything he does around the camp.

    ReplyDelete
  29. he feels his responsibility has been lifted from him and he is free from his fathers burden in life. He does not have to give him his rassions so it will be easier for Elie to live

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think what Elie means is that he no longer has to take care of his dad and do the work that his dad could not do. So this way he only has to take care for himself and have more energy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I believe that Elie feels he does not have to walk around and have the load of taking care of his father on his shoulders. He feels that he can finally focus on himself and eat his own food and not have to share. Although, he does miss his father, he does know that his life at the camp will be somewhat easier. He will be bale to eat his own portions of food and not have to share. He will be able to sleep peacefully and not have to worry about if his father is dead or alive and struggling. He will be able to focus on himself and be free from the big responsibility that was holding him back and pulling him down.

  32. When Eliezer said he was finally free after his father’s death, he meant from responsibility. He didn’t have this heavy burden pulling him down anymore. He didn’t have to take care of anyone and could think about himself now. There was also one time where he thought he should give up on his father, but since his father died I think he kind of felt relieved that he didn’t have to take care of anyone.

  33. I think that Elie feels free since he no longer has to worry about his father. He feels selfish for only thinking about himself but he knows that his father is in a better place. Elie does not have to take care of his father and no longer see him suffer. after his father was gone, he did feel sad, but he did like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. he only had to worry about one other person, which was himself.

  34. I think what Elie meant was that he feels free from responsibility of taking care of his father. Now that his father died, Elie now only has responsibility of taking care of himself and worrying about how he is going to survive. I think that he felt some sort of relief that he only had to worry about himself then worry about his father.

  35. I think that he feels free from the responsibilaties of caring for his father but he also feels free to die because he has nothing to live for except for himself, his whole family is dead

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think that when Elie says that he is free, he means that he is free to live without guilt. He is free to choose life or death, free to think only of himself, free to be selfish for once.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that when Elie's father died, Elie had felt free because he no longer had to worry about his father. I do not think he had meant it in a way that his father was a burden but in a way to where he knew that his father was holding him back. I think the Elie meant he felt free because he could now focus on his own survival. Or Elie could have meant that he was now free to stay alive and not fight when death came because he had tried to stay alive for his father but now that his father was gone, he had no reason to have to stay alive. He could now die and feel guilty while dying because he felt guilty that he was leaving his father behind.

  38. He feels free because he knew it was going to happen it was just a matter of time, When my mom was dying I kept clinging on hoping she would make it but the one night when I left I knew that I wasn’t going to get to see my mom later and when she finally passed I knew that it was over and that I could just release all of the stored emotions, and I feel like that is what Elie is going through

    ReplyDelete
  39. I believe there’s a little of both. His father did drag him down, physically and mentally, but at the same time, the only real reason Elie didn’t lose hope and give up to die is because he felt the need to keep his father motivated and alive.

    ReplyDelete
  40. • I believe what he means y this is that now that his father is gone that he can now focus on keeping himself alive. Because his father is gone all the stress and emotions that were weighing his shoulders down are gone. Now he doesn’t have to say his sick or give up food or risk his heath because of his struggling father. Also saying this I don’t belie that he is happy and relieved that his father is gone. I think he was effected by the death but he knows he did what he could. Also that all his father anted was for Elie to fight to stay alive, so that’s what Elie did.

  41. I think what Elie meant from this could go into two different directions, because while his father did hold him down mentally and especially physically, the only reason Elie pushed on for so long and worked so hard for so long was because of his father needing him and him wanting to be able to do that for him.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What Ellie meant by being feeling free after his fathers death was being pretty much responsible free of taking care of his sick father since his father was a burden. Ellie could now focus on himself to keep surviving day by day at the Concentration camp. Ellie was also free of going to drift onto death because Ellie would have wanted to die long time ago but he decided to keep living only for his father, the thought of father and son surviving together motivated each other to live it would would have broken Ellie's fathers heart to see his son dead and then he would die of sadness.

    ReplyDelete
  43. He means now that his father's dead he can now not be so stress about if he's going to live or not. Without being so stress out about his father he can now focus on surviving and their is nothing to hold him back anymore.

  44. i think Elie meant that he was finally free from doing extra work for his father, and having to take responsibility for his father. now he didnt have to worry and think for his father anymore now he only has to think for himself and figure out how to survive.

  45. he feels free that his dad is dead even though it is sad he knows that he is on his own and he can take care of himself and he can focus more on trying to live without his dad holding him back.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ellie feels free because he has this weight off of his back because he doesn't have to worry about anyone anymore and he can now try to focus on him and taking care of himself even though it is sad that his father died but now he can figure out how to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think Elie feels free because the load of keeping his father alive is now gone. He now can worry about his needs and trying to survive. Elie is now free of responsibility of keeping his father alive and well.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Elie is free because he doesn't have to worry about his father anymore. His father used to get beat up by the other prisoners every day and now Elie doesn't have to worry about if hes ok or not every day.

    ReplyDelete
  49. When He says he feels free he means he doesn’t have the burden of his dad anymore. Nothing really to worrie about except himself. He has a better chance of survival now.

    ReplyDelete
  50. In my opinion, it seems that he feels a little bit of free from each option. He feels free that he won't have to spend so much energy making sure his father was safe and healthy. But he also felt free from living. His father was the only reason he felt the need to live. And now that his father had passed, he thought there was nothing much left to keep him wanting to live.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think most likely he feels free as in free to die in peace without worrying about his father living after his death.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think he means by saying he is free of the responsibility of taking care of his father but also he was free choosing if he did want to die and when.

    ReplyDelete
  53. After the death of Elie's dad, Elie said he felt free. I think he meant that he felt free from responsibility because he had to take care of him when he was ill and he had to share his food with him. It was also his job to encourage him that they will get over it all the time. He gave up what he wanted and tried to get what he wanted first. I think he meant free of responsibility.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think eliezer thought that he no longer had to support anyone but himself and that he that without guilt he could choose to live or die whenever he decided to do something.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Elie feels freefrom the whole burden of his father. He is free from needing to survive for him, but he is also free of having to wait up for him. His father was definitely a great responsibility that was raised off of Elie's shoulders. Though, in a way, Elie was given new responsibility to survive for the sak of his father.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What he means by that is, he's free because now he can look out for himself, worry about himself, and fight to stay alive. Now it's his chance to safe himself for his father.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Elie meant that he felt like he no longer had a weak point to worry about. he could worry only about himself or just let himself drift into death peacefully without worrying that he will be the reason someone gave up.

    ReplyDelete
  58. He writes that he feels free after his father's death for multiple reasons. Firstly, of course he would feel free because he would not have any stress of always worrying about his father. In addition, he wouldn't have to do his dads slack anymore and he also wouldn’t have worry about his father could get them in trouble because of his physical weakness. Secondly, he was relieved because his dad could be in heaven and he wouldn't be suffer anymore. Finally yet importantly, he was forced to stay alive when he didn't want to, previously, he had to stay alive because of his father. He is now free to go under to drift into death. However, we all know, he made a smart choice not to die and stay alive for his family

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think that Elie means that he could die now because there was no one else he believed he should stay alive for. He loved his father so much and he was the only person Elie had left in his life but since his father is gone now he could die peacefully. That is why Elie tried so hard to stay alive and healthy, for his father. He knew his father needed him by his side.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think Eliezer feels both free of responsibility and free of being able to drift into death. I think he feels like this because he doesn’t need to worry about his father now that he’s gone from Auschwitz, but also he probably doesn’t feel like he needs to survive as in much Auschwitz anymore because his father is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think when Elie means he is free when his father died is when that he no longer needs to take care of both of them now he can just focus on survival. with his father gone he know can let go all of his emotions and weakness. Elie is both free of responsibility and free of being able to drift into death.

    ReplyDelete
  62. i think he seas he felt free because 1 his father did not want to live any more because he thought it was to hard for his son and himself to he understood how much it took and he went though and he was tired of seeing his father get worse

    ReplyDelete
  63. i think he means by that is that his father didn't want to live anymore and he was so old from all the work since the work aged him so fast and he also felt free cause now he was able to do the things he wasn't able to do before.I

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think he is saying he is free from Responsibility and free to die without worrying about family or freinds because they had already died.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think that ellie was saying that he was able to die now because he had no longer needed to worry about family and how they would need him because all of his family was dead now. He just had himself and i believe that ellie didnt want to live without his family so he sorta gave up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I believe that elie is relieved because he doesn't have to worry about his own actions and how they could affect his father. however he probably feels alone being the sole survivor of his main family. He doesn't have to worry about staying alive anymore and can slowly drift away without agonizing his father by making him watch his son die. however this could motivate Elie to survive for his father and sisters and his mother.
