What does Eliezer mean when he refers to his father as "his weak point"? Why has he come to view love as a weakness?

  1. What Elie means by his father being his weak point is that because of his father he has to pick up his father’s slack which he didn’t really have the energy or the strength to do. He also looked as his father as a weakness because his dad was old and brittle which made it hard for him to stay alive and stay under the radar for selection. This is why Elie finds love to be a weakness because in the situation it’s getting him in trouble and will probably lead to death. He also finds love to be a weakness because to survive in the concentration camp it’s basically every man for himself.

  2. In the concentration camp, there's no compassion for anyone. Loving his father makes him more emotionally weak. Thinking about losing his dad hurts him because he's all he has left. he would be stronger if he had no emotions blocking his way, he wouldn't make stupid decisions for the sake of his father. In a hostile environment like that its every man for himself, you can't waste energy on those who you love.

  3. Elie thinks his father was being weak because at a point he ended up doing everything his father could not do. His dad got super duper sick and i think that effected his work process. He came to the conculsion that viewing love is a weakness becuase he was getting in trouble for not being able to do what he was supposed to which lead to death. And deathe in the camps ment weakness. StewardS5

  4. Because of his love for his father he is being "slowed down" and lives a harder life.

  5. When Elie refers to his father as his weak point, he is saying that it hurts him to see his father weak. It brings him down seeing that his father is not strong enough anymore. He has had his father as his stronghold all his life, and now he doesn't find strength in him anymore. He finds aching, pain, and weakness and it hurts him even more. He views love as weakness now because when he loved, it tightened the bond with his father, and when he must finally let go, that break it so painful. It snaps and breaks and it becomes too much to bear.

  6. Elie referred his father as his weak point for multiple reasons, that being he was physically holding Elie back and mentally holding Elie back. Elie's father was physically wake because he gave his food to Elie, he moved slower than Elie and just seemed to have less strive as Elie. That held Elie back a little because Elie knew in order to survive, you had to be fast and strong. Elies father makes him emotionally weak because Elie loves him and wants him to be safe but he knows he cant always worry about his father which makes him emotionally weak. Its a will to survive environment and if one had less will than you then they were also your weakness. Love wont be your strength but your weakness when it comes to ultimate survival.

  7. What Elie means by his father being his weak point is that because of his father he has to pick up his father’s slack which he didn’t really have the energy or the strength to do. His father kept telling him get me this get me that, elie used to work as a prisoner and for his father. The Germans used to hit the father because he hardly does work elie will get really angry when his dad doesn't do anything just keep sending him.

  8. Elie was meaning that his father was keeping him back and acting like an anchor. He had to help his dad in some situations where if he ignored him Elie would be better off without him. Throughout the story Elie thought about leaving his father alone but eventually felt bad and helped him. This is where he views love as one of his weakness

  9. Elie means that, because of his sick and weak father he had to do the some extra work and he had to give up his gold crown because of him. He didn't wanted to be seperated and was always worried about his father. He also gave his ration of bread when he was sick.

  10. Because of emotion,Elie feel more weak, because he have emotion, his heart will sad or neverous,he only want to alive now,he don';t want to the more others things to bother his heart,he want to be a machine, then he don't need feel sad or nervous.Only thing in his minds is alive.

  11. he veiws it this way because they can hurt him they can do anything they want but if they hurt someone he loves it would catastrophic. and i believe that his dad would become a martyr for ellie

    ReplyDelete
  12. He refers to his father as his weak point because when the Germans hurt him he doesnt really feel it. But when they mistreat his father he feels bad and actually feels hurt because of it.

  13. Elie's father was slowing down, and eventually he began to rely completely on Elie to survive. This was very hard for Elie because he was already working and caring for himself at 15 years old, but with his father being sick and needing to be cared for, he was working for two. This frustrated Elie, and as much as he loved his father, he also did not believe it was fair that he wasn't even attempting to do any work. Even though Elie was extremely sad when his father died, he also felt a sense of relief because he no longer had to work double as hard.

  14. The only thing stopping him from wanting to die, is his father. Elie clearly stated that he was there to protect his father. Elie’s love for his father is what is causing him to stay alive and Elie is not able to do what he wants because he is focused on his father because his father relied on Elie and would not be able to survive without him.

  15. His weak point was his father because Elie had to take care of him and make sure he was still alive. But he also was his reason for being alive because Elie loved his father.

    ReplyDelete
  16. he describes his father as his weak point because his father was the only thing striving for him to stay alive. when elie witnessed his fathers beating, it hurt him more than it hurt his father because he was the only person elie had. when elie would see his father everyday he became weaker and weaker which made elie want to give his portion of food to his father which made elie get weaker and weaker.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He says his father is his weak point because his father is taxing to care for especially during the time he was sick, elie kept giving him more food and water which he could have used himself. Not only did staying with his father rob him of his rations but elie took many risks to stay with his father that could have killed him much sooner then if only cared about himself.

  18. Elie's weak point was his father because he felt that he was bringing him down but he did not want to live without his father and would do anything to make sure he stays alive, even sacrificing his own food for his father. He felt that he was pulling him down but he would not just leave his father to die alone. Elie sees love as a weakness because he believes that it puts you in a place of vulnerability and lets your guard down, trusting that person when in this camp you should trust no one.

  19. Elie thinks of his father as being his weakness because there are some points where Elie wants to stand up for himself against the SS but the officers threaten his father. His father is his weakness because he will do anything to make sure that his father stays alive with him and that his father is safe and not beaten or tortured.

    ReplyDelete
  20. He was always with his dad and like he believed that he would be able to survive with his dad but then again everyone was on their own because everyone else had to do it and like in the end of the book he had to live by himself because it was the only way to survive

    ReplyDelete
  21. Elie had come to view love as a weakness because of the sacrifices he had to make for his ailing father. Although Elie deeply cared for his father, he had become somewhat of a burden, causing Elie to resent him to some degree.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Elie referred to his father as "his weak point" because he maybe felt that at some points, his father was kind of holding him back and Elie ends up having to stand up for his father, but Elie wants to be able to stand up for himself. Elie's father is his weakness because he wants to make sure that his father will stay alive and will do anything to make sure that his father doesn't get beaten or tortured.

  23. The reason love can be a weakness is because that if an officer was to see you giving any signs of happiness, joy or even comfort the officer would get mad and might kill you. Also showing that you love someone the officers might take that as a close person to you and kill that person just to see you in pain

    ReplyDelete
  24. I Think what Elie meant by his father is "his weak point" is that his father is all he has. he has to look after him cause he is the last thing he has after he was separated from his mom and sister, so he would do anything for him to stay happy .

    ReplyDelete
  25. He means that he cant go on much further and is dying, I also think he became this way because of the harsh work and lack of food.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Elie's father is weak and when he has to be strong his father is never strong with Elie. Like the time where the guy wanted the crown Elie's father was getting beaten instead of fighting back like he should. Elie loves his father and that is why it is his weakness.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Because he knows if his father dies, it will crush him. You cannot love, you cannot care, because once you do, you will get hurt more than you would ever expect

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love can be a weakness in a situation such as the one Elie lived. Anytime he would see his father in pain, being hurt, or overall just struggling it tugged at his heart and all he wanted to do was help his father but he knew that if he did he would too end up thriving in pain.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that at that point in time love no longer mattered and it was every man for himself at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love can be a weakness because when Elie saw his father getting beat up he wanted to save him but something stopped him and I think that would be his weakness.

  31. 47-43 At the Auschwitz concentration camp Elie called his dad his weak point. Elie had to do his father’s work when he was to weak and would pretty much be his fathers baby sitter. Elie's father was dead weight to Elie and was just dragging Elie down with his father. At the same time Elie has spent his whole life with his father. Elie does not have a bad heart that would leave his own father after being together for so long. Elie still has a strong love for his father.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 6. In these camps there was no love for one another, you couldn't think about others because you didn't have the strength, when you loved someone Elie thought it was a weakness because it held you back it made you think about someone other then yourself. Being with his father made him weak because it seemed as though he was always scared to loose him and that was something that made you weak because you always needed to be thinking about yourself, your own safety otherwise it was harder to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Elie thinks his dad is his weak point because Elie had to do some of the things his dad could not do. So he had to do a little extra work. So that his father can stay alive Because Elie loved his father.

    ReplyDelete
  34. elies weak point was his dad because he was always going out of his way to keep his dad moveing and alive.

  35. You can not be distracted by love in this place. When you do something they will not only mess with you but with them. If they want to get you they will go to him first and it will affect you. so to have a family member or a friend you care about, it will hurt both you and them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. He looks at his father as the week point because his father was slowly killing Elie with all the constant attention. To express it in a different way Elie’s father was pushing back Elie and without his father he would have had a much easier time in the camp and would have made his chances of survival much higher.

    ReplyDelete
  37. he believed his father was holding him back from what he needed to do. he was not able to be himself with his father he had to undergo a grueling time when his father was sick and about to die which is mot likely why he felt a sense of relief when he died

    ReplyDelete
  38. Because his father is getting weaker and he is holding back Elie.Love is a weakness to him because whoever you love there will eventually get killed so there isn't any point in loving anyone at the camp in his thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Elies father was really the reason why he lived or died if his father died i believe that gave him a chance to give up making his loved one a weak point if anything were to had happened to Elies father that would be the end for him so love wasnt really the weak point it was the sacrifice for the loved one

    ReplyDelete
  40. : Elie was very focused on staying alive, but a lot of it was to stay with his dad, not just for himself. Elie’s dad pulled him down when it came to working in the camp. When he passed, it gave Elie a chance to build himself back up, get his own food, and do his own work, not his dad’s as well.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Elies father was the reason why he stayed alive for. But yet he's in Elies way because Elie has to do his father work that Elie really doesn't have the energy anymore to do extra work. Scene his father was old and getting weaker each and everyday Elie would get into trouble and almost death because of his own father

    ReplyDelete
  42. the reason why Elie stayed alive was his father. But elie also had to do extra work for his father. towards the end when his father got sick, Elie did extra work to bring food for his father. after his father died he had less work since he didnt have to do more for his father.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Elie was keeping himself alive for the sake of his father, he didn’t want to give up because he did not want to leave his father by himself to work for everything by himself, Elie was basically working for two people which was causing him to have to work even harder, when his father passed away he was able to learn how to fend for himself, and his daily life would now become slightly easier.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think what Eliezer meant when he said that his father was his weakness was that he couldn’t keep helping his father at Auschwitz. His father was very old and very brittle so he couldn’t really do any work which basically made him useless and a target to be executed but because Eliezer loved his father he couldn’t just let him die.

    ReplyDelete
  45. • I believe he refers to his father in this way is because the only reason Elie is still alive is because of his father. Now it is Elies turn to do anything he can to keep his father alive. His father is his weakness because of this, now he is focused on keeping his father alive. He’s giving up food and not doing the work that he was supposed to be doing because he is trying to keep his father alive.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Maybe because he lived in such a harsh world now that he believed there was no time for infatuating feeling such as love. Maybe h believed that all was left was survival, and possibly death. Most likely death after work. Cause work does not make you free it makes you a slave, until death do we work.

  47. Elie calls his father his weak point because he loves his father so much. At the camp its everyone for themselves, you can't think of others. But with Elie he couldn't just think of himself, he needed his father to be with him. At this point we understand that Elie will do anything for his father, and we start to see him doing things for his father since he no longer can. This love for his father made him weak because he was doing extra work for someone that was soon going to die. Elie wanted his father to be with him as long as he could but then he realized that soon he would be on his own, but Elie still loved his father no matter what the case was.

  48. He refers to his father as "his weak point" because his father physically and mentally holding him back. Physically, his father was weak and old he couldn't do much, for that reason, he had pick up his father's slack, which he didn't much strength to him. Mentally, he refers his father as his biggest mental weakness because of multiple reasons. First, it was hard to Elie to see feeble his father suffers and he could cause them trouble because of his physical weakness. Last but not least, his beloved father was all he had left and how is he going to survive without him, although he is feeble, he could look after him sometimes. Elie might lose his motivation to live if his father did die. He later found out that love is weakness because in he camp , there wouldn't be any compassion for anyone

    ReplyDelete
  49. He describes him as his weak point because in some ways the love holds him back. He would do anything for his father and sometimes this could mean risking something for him. Also this gives Elie more things to worry about instead of himself and his own survival. What Elie doesn't realize is that his father gives a lot for him as well, like the many times he got his father’s rations.

    ReplyDelete
  50. He refers to his father as a week point because he is holding him back. (Mentally and physically). His dad is very week and is old; he can’t do as much as he could do when he was younger. Next he is mentally holding him back. He loves him a lot and you don’t just give up on people that you love, you do everything in your power to keep them with you. When he died it was a sad relief to Elies. He knew he was holding him back but it was sad his dad had died and couldn't make it with him.

    ReplyDelete
  51. He feels that his father is his weak point because if he cares for someone else and that person was to be beat the person that loved the person being beat they might not make a very smart move as like to intervene and may ultimately lead the person intervening to be beat and possibly killed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Eliezer probably has a hard time thinking about loving someone so much when a devastation like such has an effect on his life. He probably wants to show his father love and care, but it’s hard to do when all you see is death. His Father was holding him back from his priorities in the camp.

  54. Elie thought his dad was at "his weak point" because he was his dad who was strong and always positive before he came into this camp has been changed so weak and unable. He also viewed his love as weakness. Even though he loved everyone so much he couldn't take care of them or help them in the camp. It made him think that his love is such a weakness.

    ReplyDelete
  55. His dad is a very important person to him and if anything was to happen to him Elie would likely do something foolish. I think he probably sees love as a weakness, because love often makes people weak and slows them down.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think when Eliezer says his father being his weak point which could also say Eliezer couldn't just take care of himself he had to take of his father and the more his father got older the more attention Eliezer needed to give to him. He comes to view love as weakness because that meant if that person you loved died you mentally wouldn't be able to work which meant you most likely would get killed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Elie means that if his father dies he’ll have nothing. He also refers to the fact that his father is too old for the work they are assigned to, which, because elie and his father have to stay together at all costs, puts both elie and his father at risk.

    ReplyDelete
  58. i think what he means by that is he could just be taking care just himself but instead he has to take care of his father and himself. but and he took care of his father when he was sick when he could have 2 bowls of soup and rations

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think what he means by this is that he cares about his father so much that he would do anything to protect him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i think what he refers is that his week point is love as when he was doing everything he could for his father because he was afraid of losing hes father, as like in a own thought i dont want to lose my mother and if she goes away (dies) i would feel sad and no good because i would not be with my mother any more.

    ReplyDelete
  61. His father was his weakness because he loved him enough to get himself in trouble for he could care for himself but his father was another story as his father got weak he had to work harder for what he didn't need to do love became a weakness, it was his Achilles heel if it was struck it could cause him to die it was a part of him he had no control over but he had to protect.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think that his father is a weak point because he had to take care of him and he couldn't take care of himself and he refers love as a week point because he wanted to take care of himself but love was resisting him from taking care of himself and focusing on things he needed to do because he was worrying about his father all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  63. His father is his weak point because he cared and loved his father so much that he would get in trouble so that he can take care of him. his father got weaker everyday so that he had to work harder to help him. once you love something you will do almost anything to take care of it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. He says that because he knows he'll do anything for his father, he loves his father. He also knows that his father isn't that strong anymore, so if he to carry tons of weight, he'll do it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Eliezer meant that he loved his father so much that it could be the death of him.He would do anything just to protect his father but in Auschwitz no one had any mercy so it didn’t matter. if you disobeyed, you died. no matter the circumstances

    ReplyDelete
  66. Elie cared about and loved his father so much that it hurt him a lot seeing his father getting beat and not being able to do anything or about it. Seeing the only person you have left to care for, live for, and love getting hurt, really gets Elie angry and depressed. Elie wants to help, save, and protect his father but he couldn't and that's not fair, it's not right. He didn't want his father to leave his side, he was not ready for his father, the person he loved the most, to die because then Elie wouldn't have anyone anymore, he would be all alone.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Elie refers that to his father because he really cared for him and loved him. He would get really mad if someone hurt his father. His father met a lot for him, he was the only person who was left from his family to support him.

    ReplyDelete
  68. elie says that cause he really cares about his father and he loves him and he only has his father left and he would get mad if any one hurt his father since its his dad and he loves him a lot like I said and also his father meant a lot and his father was the only one to support him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ellie referes to his dad as his weak point because his dad is old and not able to do as much work and since ellie should stay with him it also effects ellie in a bad way. Ellie says love is his weakness because it will cause him to do things that would not allow him to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Elie implies his fathers weakness is love because then he is bound to protection what/who he loves which could easily get him killed. Elizer views his father as weak because he doesn't have very much hope or purpose left in his life, all he is striving towards is his sons survival.
