Some prisoners (kapos) worked with the guards, terrorizing their fellow inmates. Why would a prisoner end up in this role?

  1. Prisoners would end up in the role working with guards because they didn’t want to be harassed and put in the gas chambers or sent to work. They also ended up in the role of a guard because they would rat out there fellow jews to the SS about any thought of revolt. When prisoners had this power they would often harass their own kind.

  2. Being a kapo could be almost worse than actually working. They were forced to terrorize their own kind out of fear. They had to beat and yell at friends or family. The guilt from this would be terrible. It works the other way around too. Lets say a father was working, and his son was forced to be a kapo, screaming and beating his own dad to work. This made everything harder emotionally.

  3. Being a prisoner was hard becuase they had to be like the soliders. They ended up in this role because they did something very well. And they wanted to know if you were a rat. They wanted you to abuse and figure out facts about what all the Jews were saying. The Germans were sneaky and didnt care about anyones privacy. StewardS5

  4. The prisoners(kapos) recieved the spot because they were forced to if they were seen doing something well. The kapos would harrass and beat their own kind and guard the other prisoners. Although this was a brutal job the only reason they were doing it was for their own survival. As a kapo you were guarenteed not to be gased or beaten.

  5. In my opinion the reason prisoners would put other prisoners in this role would be as a punishment. It could be seen as a punishment because you would be terrorizing your people.

  6. I feel as if the Germans found certain people that they could trust to sort of take over their own personal roles.

  7. Being a kopo was definitely worse than working. Possibly worse than death because they were forced to torture their own kind

  8. 63-84 at aushcwitz concentration camp prisoners were chosen to be guards and their job was to terrorize other prisoners. These prisoners were chosen probably chosen because they have cold hearts, would turn anyone in and enjoyed beating people. These people liked the power and would abuse the power to beat people.

  9. 11. When a prisoner was a Kapo they became mean and heartless, tormenting there own kind so they don't die in the end. They were usually chosen for snitching on revolts or thoughts of escape, also for there health. Healthy and strong prisoners were usually chosen to be kapos so they could lead and beat the prisoners for misbehaving or not following orders.

  10. prisoners (kapos) worked with the guards for their own survival. Kepos weren't gased or beaten. I think kepos were chosen because most of them where cold hearted and they liked abusing there power.

  11. A prisoner would end up in this role because the German soldiers needed people other than themselves to organize and control a large number of men, and some kapos were doing well. These positions were a privilage and kapos who became guards would treat their fellow inmates harshley because they didn't want to lost their positions or be punished.

  12. The Prisoners did this so they didn’t have to be hurt with them; they did this to avoid getting hurt and to get more rations of bread. Also what they did is very unforgivable it was the best chance at survival to do. Doing so would have increased their chance at surviving by a lot and it is completely reasonable for what they did even though they completely became complete traitors to their fellow family and friends.

  13. If some prisoners doing well, then they can be the leader of others prisoners. It's kind of reward to encourage the prisoners to workinghard. If they do not work hard then they will receive punish, from minds and body.

  14. The prisoners were earned this role by being considered trustworthy to the soldiers. They didn't want to beat their fellow prisoners, but it was the only way they could keep from not being beaten themselves, and keep the trust of the soldiers.

  15. Prisinors would agree to be Kapos because they would probably think that they would have a better chance of living longer if they worked with the Nazi's. They could also rat out other prisoners and make themselves look good. The Kapo's probably believe in every man for himself.

  16. the prisoners didnt get beaten sence they were helping the guard. a prisoner can end up in this role because some of the soilders needed help.

  17. they end up in this role because for them it was the key of life that they can live doing it. they had no where to go and didn't wanted to die in the camp so they did the work rather than to die. even if i was there than i would also do it.becase the camps name was 'work make you free'.

  18. a prisoner would end up in this role for probbaly being a loyal worker and being in the camp for a long time .the prisoners who were guards had to be trusted so the gestapo had to really know the guards/prisoners.

  19. Appearance to the Gestapo, such as size, color of hair and eyes(blonde hair, blue eyes), if they were a fighter or the leader of a group, maybe a cop. The way they treated fellow prisoners and to guards.

  20. 9. Some prisoners were forced to become kapos, because they were strong enough to work on that job. That was very hard for both prisoners and kapos .Kapos were forced to beat and kill people that they know –like friends, parents or people that lived on the same street with them. In the book we can find that one man was forced to work as a kakapo and put bodies in the crematorium. During his work he had to put his father into the chimney. I cannot even imagine how that to put your own father into the crematorium is and too see that your own son kills you. I believe that kapos would give everything that they had just to end those tortures.

  21. They ended up in this role because they were "safe" from the nazis and they thought they could treat the other jews bad because they were higher than them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. They would end up in these roles because they were particularly brutal or they sold someone out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They would end up in this role because they didn't want to be terrorized by the guards themselves. It also gave them more freedom with the guards and weren't as badly treated as the other prisoners. They might also wind up in this position because they might want to beat up the other prisoners themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i believe it was to torture them. They were forced to harass there own kind for the Nazis amusement. it was true torture think about it like this, what if you were forced to torture your best friend for a person you hated amusement. it would not just be torture for them, but for you too

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Kapos would work with the guards because they didn’t want to be terrorized by them. It was like a safe haven if you were a Kapo. It was also a form of torture because they were forced to harass their own kind. It was also amusing to the Nazi’s because they could just sit back and relax. Although it was a form of torture, many people took this power for granted and started to look down on their people. They have this weird satisfaction that they’re higher than anyone else now because they’re a Kapo.

  26. for a prisoner to become a kapo they would have to do something good. they would have the kapos so that they would be able to see whos a rat or not. the kapos would beat their own kind, friends, family. they would do anything to keep the nazis on their side and not have the nazis punish them by beating other jews.

    ReplyDelete
  27. For an inmate to become a kapo they would have to show anger to other inmates then the nazis would call them kapos and watch them beat there own people.

  28. A prisoner would have to do something good to become a kapo. They end up in this role so they can see whos a rat or not. The kapos would beat their own friends and family. They would do anything to keep from getting beaten by the Nazis.

  29. A prisoner would get this role from good behavior and obeying the German guards every command. If a guard saw that you worked harder than the other, were stronger than the others, and listened better than the others then you most likely would or could become a kapo. Prisoners would be ecstatic if they got this role because it meant that they would not be getting beat hardly at all and could take their anger out on the prisoners in their section. If you were a kapo then you also would receive special treatment from the guards and would get it easier than anyone else if you did your job right.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Prisoners would agree to take on this gruesome job in order to postpone their own inevitable fate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. A prisoner who worked hard, was strong and obeying would be given the role of a kapo. The prisoners would probably like to have this role because it would mean that you had slightly less work since you would order the other prisoners around and it would mean less beatings since you worked with the other guards.Being a kapo also meant that you could take your anger out on the other prisoners.

    ReplyDelete
  32. They had authority over prisoners, but not over Nazis. A prisoner would end up in this role because he felt he had power in a powerless state. They probably were fed better and treated a little more kindly than the other prisoners.

  33. A prisoner would end up with a role of a guard by being very obedient and not doing any wrong at the concentration camp, German soldiers would pick among those people that would be loyal to them. Jewish guards would beat and harass their own kind, Jewish guards would probably do that to their own people by taking their anger out on them and for their survival of being fed a little more and being treated a little bit more better than the others.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The kapos were prisoners too they got this role because they did something good and they only took this job because they wanted to survive as well but they had to torture their own friends and family which made their job terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  35. A prisoner could end up with this role and job by having good behavior and getting along with the german soldiers and guards. People would want this job because it would get them out of being beaten by the guards because they would be doing the same job. This also meant that you might receive better food than the others.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It was to show the other prisoners that they should be scared and they also should obey them and they had authority over the prisoners. sometimes the guards and kapos would also just beat up the prisoners just for their enjoyment because they knew they had the power to do it. The also reason the Kapos were able to do this is because they obey more and they ended up getting more food.

    ReplyDelete
  37. to become a Kapo you had to be strong and on the guards good side. the prisoners probably liked having this role because they would have less work, but they also had to beat up the other prisoners which must have been hard to do.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The kapos were strong and they weren't afraid to beat others to live in better conditions, they were cruel because they were scared of getting hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  39. • The kapos job was to beat on their own friends a family. The prisoners that they were also. I think this would be very tough because no one should have to beat up others to stay alive. It is very cruel. Kapos beat up elies father and elie couldn’t to anything about it otherwise he would be beat himself.

  40. I think a prisoner ended up becoming a Kapo because they didn’t want to die and also because it allowed them more freedom and gave them a bunch of perks inside Auschwitz. Because of these perks, they felt like they were higher than all the other Jews and started to look down on them.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The prisoner would end up in this role because they would be asked to become a kapo after hard work or obeying orders well, most would accept because they got special access to things not normally allowed in the camp like alcohol and cigarettes. They had to beat prisoners and keep them in line though. They would also be asked to spy on prisoners and denounce them. Access to civilian clothing was a major perk because they could stay warmer in the winter.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The prisoners, if they were strong or worked hard would be put in this role. They would be mean and viscous because they thought if they didn't do a good job then they would either be killed or beaten. They were treated better than the other prisoners at Auschwitz when they had this job.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i think why some prisoners would get this role is if they did something for the guards. or if they were close to the other guards in a certain way.

    ReplyDelete
  44. to the Nazis, they were rewording the Jews for good behavior and they would declare them as Kapos. They Were strongest out of all the other Jews as well. They killed tortured and harassed other Jews. The kapos did not like doing the horrendous acts, but if they didn’t obey they unfortunately had to die.

  46. They might have ended up with this role because the prisoners that were chosen had to be the strongest out of all of the prisoners and the most hard working that could get the job done. They also would have to be the toughest people that could resist people begging them to not kill or hit them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The Nazis needed more men to be in charge of the large amounts of Jews that were working so they had people that don't have a bad reputation and make them kapos. Kapos got better fed and didn't get in trouble with the other people who were Jews.

  48. Some prisoners ended up in the role working with the guards and some ended up in the role persecuting their friends or the people they knew because they were put in the situation where they only think about themselves and being selfish, They took this job to save their lives. They wanted more food. They wanted to get of that condition by any mean so they ended up in this role.

  49. I remember reading in a book called Maus, that prisoners who could speak both German and English were considered "Special", and were granted the position of a Kapo.

    ReplyDelete
  50. the kapo was placed to keep the other prisoners calm it helped put trust in their superiors it also helped the officers get more hands to help. the prisoners that were the strongest and looking for anything to make there life easier were mostly picked the kapo had an easier life but ere threatened death if their prisoners were to revolt.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Prisoners would become kapo if they were cruel and unforgiving to there fellow prisoners. And people who only had to look out for them self were usually very eager to get this role as it would increase there chance of survival.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Prisoners would become kapos to escape the brutalities of the camps. The Nazis employed these kapos because they were usually extra brutal to the other prisoners.

    ReplyDelete
  53. A prisoner would end up as this role if they were didn’t want to work or be sent to death right away ad were strong , so they were selected to cause suffering and terror themselves. Being a Kapo wasn’t a privilege though, in fact it was between just as bad as working and death. You have to cause pain to other inmates-including the ones you love, you can still be killed anytime, and then guilt and self-suffering is involved. I believe that being a Kapo was one of the worst things that could happen to you in Auschwitz and other camps.

    ReplyDelete
  54. They were scared about the whole thing. Because they know the guards don't get killed so they thought if they played their role they would be safe too. And right now they're not worried about the others, they're worried about if they're getting out of the camp alive. They want to live.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Some prisoners were forced to with the guards, terrorizing their fellow inmates because they were strong and suitable to do these jobs. The prisoners didn't know whether this was a curse or bless. Some think it would be a good opportunity because they would not be suffer as much and they would have more power upon others. In another hand, some was force to beat up their own acquaintances, some was even force to beat up their relatives like father,... I still remember about a guy, who was force to put his father into the chimney. He had no choice but to obey and bless for his father afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think if a prisoner showed he was suitable to work with the guards they would allow him to, but I also think that sometimes the prisoner would be forced to work with the guards no matter how they felt about beating or killing the other prisoners. Most of them I would think had to be strong and intimidating so that the other prisoners wouldn’t complain about fairness.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think that the prisoners dint want to die in the chambers so they did anything like working to stay alive. And maybe the kapos were stronger and healthier then other Jews. And i think that sometimes the guards will just force them to be in this role.

    ReplyDelete
  58. A prisoner would end up in this role if they were seen to be needing punishment or simply if they were just suited for the job. Some prisoners were known to be criminals or "dark minded" and would have been better at this job, just like some prisoners who are strong and are used for working at the crematorium for lifting bodies.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Prisoners would end up in the role of the guard because of survival. if a prisoner was told to make sure the other prisoners were ready to go. the prisoner would do anything to get them ready from beating them up to killing them. that's what he would do just for survival. probably prisoners who were in the camp for a long time or strong prisoners were put as the guards.

    ReplyDelete
  60. because he was a strong prisoner and willing to do anything as doing anything the guards anything they say to get more privileges then other prisoners his job was basically keep everyone calm or scared so they dont react as a group to kill the guards and escape from the camp.

    ReplyDelete
  61. because they were willing to do anything to stay alive and follow orders and also they would do anything to get more options than the rest of the prisoners in the camp and also they might have gotten this position for being strong or just good at orders.

    ReplyDelete
  62. they would have to big and strong enough to keep others in line listen not disobey orders as well you would have to be a pretty loyal person

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think that people the jews that chose to be kapos when it was offered to them is because instead of them being beat they would be able to beat prisoners and save themselves from the pain.

    ReplyDelete
  64. In order to be a Kapo you had to be strong and muscular. The reason they would take this job is because they didnt have as bad conditions as the other prisoners and would instead of being beaten would get to beat people instead. It saved them the pain but they also had the pain of hitting their jews.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 1.the Kapos were Jewish prisoners who had exceeded the expectations of there captors. the Kapos were allowed private rooms, larger food portions, and were rarely beaten. however the Kapos were monitored with more ferocity than the standard prisoner, if a kapo made a mistake they would be beaten even worse than a standard prisoner. Kapos would beat other prisoners just to survive. it didn't matter if they were beating family, friends, anyone.
