pp. 27 - 43

When the Wiesel family enters Auschwitz, the family is separated almost immediately. We hear about the event from Elie's perspective. What do you think Elie's mother thought about as the family entered the camp and went through the selection process?

  1. I believe a lot of things were going through Elie’s mothers mind but I think she was completely oblivious to what was really going to happen to her and Tzipora. What Elie’s mother main focus was on keeping Tzipora by her side because Elie was with his father. When selection came she probably was relieved that she didn’t have to go with the men. What she didn’t know is that she was actually being sent to the crematory.

  2. 1. 27-43 As Elie’s family was arriving at the German concentration camps the first thing that happened was the selection process. Selection is when the Germans decide which Jews are fit to work and which Jews they are going to kill. At this point I think Elie’s mom was scared and confused. She was scared because the fear of maybe never seeing her family again. She was also confused because she didn’t know what was happening because at this point the Germans didn’t tell them what was going on. This picture is at Auschwitz concentration camp in World War II when the Germans were trying to eliminate the Jewish race.

  3. I think that she was almost relieved as she entered the camp. After being on the train for days almost anything would seem better. She wasn't expecting anything and she didn't know where she was going. She most likely had anxiety when she was taken away from her husband and son, but there's no way she could of known what would happen next.

  4. I think Elie's mother was probably concerned and confused. Ahead of her were two roads basically; death and survival. What she didn't know was the categorization details or why separation was happening. As a mother, she probably worried about her family breaking up and her children's safety.

  5. I feel that when Elie's mother was separated from her family she felt scared. she didn't know who these people with guns were, where she was, what they wanted, why they were doing this, and how can human beings be so cruel to there own kind.

  6. I think Elie's mother was really on edege about going to the camp. She did know what was happening because she didnt know what was going on and where her family was going to end up in the selection process. The slection process was when the Germans put the jews in places to work that fit them. StewardS5

  7. I think that Elie's mother was probably confused and a little bit worried, however i do not think she expected the extreme mortality that had taken place in the events. The Nazis like to keep the Jew very unformed and clueless so they really had no idea what they were in store for, honestly she was probably better off this way because the truth of what was gonna happen was so awful.

  8. I believe a lot of things were going through Elie’s mothers mind but i think that she was completely sure about was was gonna happen.when they entered Elie's mom was scared and some how confused, because she wasn't sure what might happen because the people nither the germans told her was going on.After some minutes she heard the germans talking saying "we will take her to the crematory.

  9. i think her mother was concerned and scared and didnt want to get hurt and she is probably worrying about her family and doesn't want it to break up and everything get lost.the selection process probably really confusing for her and scary and the thought of never seeing her family again probably scared her to death and the Germans didn't tell the Auschwitz prisoners what was going on.

  12. When Elie and his family arrived at the camp, I'm sure they were all confused, but also very relieved. After being on the train for so long, just being able to stretch their legs made them feel better. However, that relief faded away when the officers began separating families. Elie’s mother was probably frantically looking around for the rest of her family, trying to keep everyone together, and when the officers sent Elie and his father to the opposite side of the rest of the family, she probably couldn't do much else than hope that they would all see each other again soon.

  13. Elie's mother was probably feeling confused, scared, and hopeful. After 3 day long train ride she was probably feeling glad to be out. Sadly though she didn't know what was coming next. After the selection processes she was feeling worried after being separated from Elie and her husband but partly hopeful that they would meet each other again.

  14. I think that the mom was trying to calm down her children in all the chaos. she was also most likely clinging onto them to make sure they didn't get separated again.Unfortunately little did she know that they were being sent to their own death.

  15. When the wiesel arrived, im sure the odor of death lingered in the air bringing some concern to their mother. When the family was being screened and selected im sure she was frantic. i can only imagine the fear instilled in her heart watching her family being torn apart by some angry germans

  17. I believe Elie's mom was going through a lot of mixed emotions and confusion about the whole thing. Getting off that train, crowded and tired, she wouldn't expect anything to be worse, but she was wrong. Then she arrive to the selection process, which was where people were separated into two categories, fit to work or not fit to work. This happened at the beginning, just as they arrive at Auschwitz and the women had been separated from the men. Their family was now separated, and she didn't even know what was yet to come. Even though it was all new to her, she knows this isn't normal but that she can't do anything about it.

  19. 1.) I believe she thought that she may see her son again because this was a normal concentration camp (or as she thought). I believe this because she showed little to know concern for this and neither did her son. It almost seems as though she is not scared about it at all. Elie goes on later to explain how he never would have thought that would be the last time he saw her.

  20. 1. 27-43 When Elie and his family arrived at a German concentration camp other known as Auschwitz his whole family was also separated. In this time of selection Elie's mother was probley confused and terrified just as everyone that entered the camp.People that entered the camp would automatically be separated from your family. Elie did not know why this was happening because the Germans did not give them answers and when they did, they were lies. Elie or anyone did not know what would happen to them after being separated but they knew it was very bad.

  21. I think that Elie's mother was probably extremely terrified, because they were taken from their homes and put on a train for 3 days to a strange place surrounded by barbed wire and had guards with machine guns and guard dogs making sure no one would escape.Who wouldn't be scared.

  22. I think that Elies mother was thinking the worst thoughts possible ,yet the unknown was possibly also there creeping in her mind they had already been exposed to the sights and scents of death from the gas chambers so they didnt know if guys were dying and girls were living or vice versa leaving her to think the worst and with the extreme amount of people at auschwitz she knew that there splitting would cause them to probably likely never see each other again ,with no goodbyes and no sense of knowing whats in store for them only the worse could be there, but also since they didnt know ANYTHING besides the obvious there couldve been some positive.

  23. The way the family was separated, they all must have been distraught. The mother must have been asking so many questions like who will take care of them, why were men and women separated. What would happened to them or us. To be on the train so long and to get out and to be separated not getting any time with the family must have been terrible. the only good part is the train ride because your were drove out of your home and being shipped somewhere you don't know. Also because that was the last part you were with your family.

  24. I think Elies mom was very worried and scared. She mightve thought that someone in her family wouldnt make selection so it worried her even more.

  25. When Elie’s mother and their family entered the camp, and went through the selection process, they were separated. All they had was believe that they will be fine and they had no idea what was going to happen in the camp so she must have suffered and scared for what will happen. she probably was worried about her family because she was send to other section where she had only her little daughter tripoza. So they just hope that everything will be alright.

  26. it was probably very nerve racking for her because she probably had the thought she would never see elie or her husband again

  27. Elie's mother probably was aware of what was going on and what was going to happen to her family. She must have felt nervous and horrified of the thought of being seperated from her family. Just as Elie knew he may not see his mom and sister again. She probably thought the same thing, that she would not see Elie or her husband again.

  29. I think his mother was nervous and worried for her family. She didn't know exactly where they were going. When she found out it was going to a camp, she might have been more relieved (not realizing what kind of camp it was), because of the living conditions they were already living in. But, when they got back to the camp, and her and her daughter got separated from her husband and son, she probably felt like she would see them again, for a moment. She thought she was getting a shower and that they probably were getting the same. Or, she might have been scared, maybe she had a gut feeling she would never see them again.

  30. Elies mother was really nervious and probably thinking that she was never going to see Elie or his father.as they started getting farther and farther away she probably started crying.Elies sister was crying to probabaly

  31. I think that Ellie's mother was relieved to finally get off the train that they were traveling in for days. She did not necessarily know what they were walking into when they arrived at Auschwitz. She probably was confused and a little worried as she was separated from her husband and son but a bit relieved that she still had her daughter with her.

  32. When the family members were going through the selection process. Elie's mother was probably confused and scared because she didn't know what was happening. She could've been scared to be split away from her family, and probably tried to protect Tizpora because she was young. A lot of things were probably going through her head because it all came at her really fast. However, i thought the main things i thought she probably thought about was the safety of her family and young Tzipora.

  33. I would imagine it was very frightening and confusing for her to be separated from her husband and son so abruptly. I doubt she could have predicted what exactly was about to happen because of the sheer insanity and unfathomable cruelty of the events that took place.

  35. As they entered the camp she would have been worried from the start in the large crowd of people that they might be separated. And from the conditions in the cattle cars with hardly any food or water(only what they brought). When they were separated in the selection everyone was scared that they might not find each other again in the huge chaotic crowd .

  36. Elie's mother thought that why were they being separated from her son and husband. Even though all that mattered to her was to keep her daughter safe. Also, they had to hope that everything was going to be safe. They had no idea that they were going to see Elie for the last time.

  37. I think that the mother was terrified and didn't want to be separated from her family. She's a mother, so I think that she would do anything to stay with her family, but she knew that if she tried anything she would be killed on the spot. When the family first entered the camp, she probably didn't realize that that would be the last time she see's her husband and son. This feeling most likely killed her inside. A mother always wants to make sure that her kids are safe and healthy, but since they were at the camp, she would have no idea how they would be. Aside from thinking about her family, she was probably nervous about herself. She might have been thinking "What if I don't make it?" "What's going to happen to me?". The mother most likely wanted to make sure all her kids and husband made it through the selection.

  38. I think that Elie's mom was scared, but at the same time didn't really have a clue on what was going to happen after she and Elie's sister, Tzipora, got separated. She most likely had a lot of things going through her head. The only thing that she probably thought to do was to protect Tzipora. For example, Elie's mom was stroking Tzipora's hair as a way to protect her daughter of having fear and possibly keeping her calm.

  39. Elie's mother was probably scared because she had to face the fact that she had to leave her family so she had to leave her son and husband. Also she went to the crematorium which she also knew that it was time for her to go and then she was depressed that this happen so quick.

  40. I think that Ellie's mother may have been thinking about of a lot of things. She was probably aware that the place they were entering, wasn't at all what she and her family had hoped or thought for. She didn't know exactly where they were going but she was probably frightened and worried for hers and her kids life. She was probably thinking of how happy she was for her and her daughter to get a shower after not having taken one for over a week. She had also probably thought her and her daughter would see Elie and his father again soon but that they needed to be separated for the showers because of genders.

  41. I think there were a lot of things going on in the mind of Elie's mother , as the family entered the camp . She would be lost in deep thoughts. She was afraid and worried because of many reasons. She was afraid to be separated from her family and because she wouldn't know what the Germans were going to do with her and her daughter. Moreover, she was worried about her son and her husband, will they be alive. Nevertheless, she still had her daughter beside her. I think the only thing she would do was to pray for her family and herself.

  42. elies mother was obviously oblivious to what was happening like everyone else was. i feel as if his mother was heart broken to see her husband and son gradually walk away from her but i think she was more concentrated on tzipora more since she was by her side and elie was with his father. her main priority was probably trying to keep tzipora safe from everyone else.

  43. gonzalezK2- Ellie's mother was probably feeling really nervous and worried when she arrived to the Camp in Auschwitz. There were many SS men holding tommy guns . There were flames in the sky and right away when people arrived the SS officer announced women to the right and men to the left. She realized at that moment that she wont be able to see her son Ellie and her husband in a few hours or ever again.

  44. I think Elies mother was clue less on what was going to happen. I believe that she was so lost on what was happening with the selection and why the girls and guys were getting separated from each other. Elies mother just focused on keeping Tzipora near her. She knew that Elies and his father would be okay. Elies mom didn’t really know what was going to happen to them. I would think they had some thoughts on what was going to happen, after they got off the train to Auschwitz and smelled the horrific smell of burning human and seeing the Germans with guns waiting outside.

  45. Elie's mother was probably very confused after arriving at Auschwitz. Elie's mother wasn't expecting the terror that was happening, and after the categorization she was separated and probably worrying about her family and their safety and praying that they would be unharmed.

  46. In my opinion Elie's mother was worried because she has no idea what is going to happen to her or her family, she probably didn't think it was going to be good after the awful living conditions of the ghetto. After the selection she might have realized that she may have not seen her husband or son ever again, so she was scared and through all the chaos there still was an awful stench that was the crematory

  50. Elie's mother was worried, she had a feeling in her stomach that she hated, She tried to keep her daughters close. Even after Elie was separated with his father, She was hopeful about all of them passing the election process. There is a part where Elie's mother was stroking Tzipora'a hair as a type of calming method. Elie's mother had no idea what was coming to her and her daughters

  51. Elie's mother probably felt scared and worried for the dangers ahead. but she probably was worried about keeping Tzipora and herself safe from the future dangers ahead. As a mother would do she probably tried to comfort her daughter, not actually to comfort her but to help comfort herself from the mystery of death ahead. She trusted Mr. Wiesel to take care of her son, and they were safe. Sh could have said a prayer or two asking for safe answers. Comfort, and hope that the SS men with the machine guns wont fire off ear deafening shots.

  53. I think that Elie's mother was terrified. I believe that she was scared in more ways than just one. I think she has the fear of not knowing where her son is going and what will become of him. The fear of what will happen to her husband. The fear of what is going to happen to her daughter and also what will happen to her. She was probably confused, but based on others having such religious beliefs I am sure she was praying in hope that God would set things right and align them all on the same path once again.

  54. I’m Almost positive that Elie’s mother was terrified to enter the Auschwitz Camp. Not knowing for sure what she was getting into, and also frightened for her family’s safety and health. Being separated so quickly probably had her thinking that not everything was going to be a walk in the park.

  60. The mother was probably scared to death. She was about to be separated from her children forever. She knew that too, there was no way that she didn't have the instinct to tell that she was about to die and so were her children. I think she was just trying to spend the last few minutes with her children without worrying.

  61. Elie's mother was definitely feeling panicky and alarmed because of the foreign terrain they had just been unloaded onto. All these frightening and unusual noises coming from fearful people, machine guns, and probably constant yelling. The selection process must have been unbearable. Without knowing where Elie and his dad could be going and if they were going to live or not. All Elie's mother could do was comfort her daughter and hope her whole family would survive.

  70. When Elie's family came to Auschwitz in the middle of the night they were force to be separated from their family. I think Elie's mom was really worried and extremely sad. She might have known she wouldn't be able to see Elie and his dad for a long time or maybe forever. His mom was scared when she had to go through the selection process which her life was depended on.

  71. I think that Elie's mother was really confused and scared. Like all moms feel something, i think she felt that they are going to be separated. I think she got confused too because from along train ride they came to a really weird pace that they had never been to.

  72. It was probably a very frightening experience for her. She was probably unsure whether or not she was going to be able to stay with her family. And I think she probably had the feeling that she was seeing the ends of her days.

  73. 27-43 World War 2 is when Elie's family arrived to a German concentration camp called Auschwitz. The selection process was the first thing that happened to Elie's family and that is where people were chosen to work or killed by if they look healthy or not. Elie's mother must have been scared and terrified because she has to witness her children taken away from her. The Germans didn't tell Elie's mother so she had no idea what was going on.

  74. 1. When Elie’s family just arrived to the concentration camp a German officer said that all people must go through selection. As a result Elie and his father went to one side and Elie’s mother and his sister went to other side. During that process I think Elie’s mother was scared, first of all because she did not know what will happen after selection. Like every mother in the world she tried to protect her children; however what she could do in that situation? She was afraid of not her, mostly of her childrens’ future. However, I think she did not suppose that they will die in the gas chambers, because there was no panic among people (officer said that they will take a bath and they even gave soups and towels to prisoners. In other words nothing predicted that they will die).

  76. I believe that she felt about the same way as Elie and his father. They probably had the same mindset of adding hope. They hopped that they would somehow be brought together later in the camp. The women probably felt more venerable though, than the men. A reason might be because they feel like they have less strength than the men so they wouldn't be useful. Also they might feel like they have less protection then the men.

  77. I think that Elies mother was probably very anxious and unsure of what was going on, I think she had a strong fear in the back of her mind that she may not see her children ever again, just like Elie she didn’t know what was happening to them, just as Elie and his father were unsure of what would happen to her, and because they were separated so quickly probably put even more stress onto her.

  78. • I think that Elie’s mother was very worried, upset and scared when she new they were to be split up almost immediately. I think this because mothers tend to be very worried and protective about their family. Often times over protective. Also as they entered the camp they had no idea what the future held, I’m sure this was extremely tough for her.

  79. I think that Elie's mother was probably very scared, if not for herself, then for her children. All around her she sees families being torn apart and divided. I think that at this point she would be very nervous, because she was about to lose her son and husband. But ina way, maybe she was happy as well, because she got to keep her daughter "safe" at least for a little longer.

  81. I think that Ellies mother during the entering of the camp was scared. She was worried that her family would be separated and that they would not see each other again. But once they were taken apart she wasn't as scared as she could be because each of her child was with a parent. This comforted her because she knew that her son was safe with his father while her daughter was safe with her.

  82. I believe his mother must have been very afraid when she entered auschwitz. She didn't know where she was had been separated from her husband and her son she was most likely very afraid. She also had to calm her daughters who were probably also afraid of the big men guns and fire. She might have even lost her daughters in the group and was confused no one knew why they were there and what was going to happen to them so they were all confused, dazed, and afraid.

  84. I think that Elie's mother felt very scared because she had no idea what was going on. Although she was comforting her daughter Tzipora and telling her everything was going to be okay, Elie's mother was very confused. She was probably thinking about where Elie and his father were and what was going to happen to them. That's all that was going through her mind, her family's safety and just hoping that everything will turn out okay.

  85. I believe that Elie's mother was very worried about her family because even thought she may have had her own suspicions as to what would take place, she had no evidence or proof as to what would happen. However she did not voice her concerns in order to keep her family calm and as safe as possible. she was probably terrified but appears calm in front of her children in order to keep them calm and focused on the events at hand.
